• Alliteration Repetition of the same sound at the beginning of words in a phrase (Peter Parker Picked Pears in Paradise
• Anaphora Repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive phrases, clauses or lines (Every day, every night, every way)
• Antithesis Opposites, contrasting parallell ideas "Best times. Worst times", "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind"
• Euphemism Using a subtler expression than the one that may come across as rude or offensive ("He passed away" rather than "He died"
• Hyperbole Exaggeration ("I wept oceans of tears", "Millions are affected"
• Irony Expression in which words mean something opposite to what is actually said (If a teacher says to a quiet class; "Don't you all speak at once"
• Metaphor Expression which makes an implied comparison ("The black sheep of the family", "You are my sunshine")
• Simile Same meaning as a metaphor BUT an expression which makes an explicit comparison using the words "as" or "like" (Busy as a bee, Sparkle like diamonds)
• Triad - Rule of three A repetition of three items, phrases, concepts, words etc. ("The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly", "Blood, sweat, and tears", "Veni, Vidi, Vici")
• Personification Giving human characteristics to non-human objects (The flame of the candle DANCED in the wind", "The city never SLEEPS"
• Rhetorical question A question that is posed for emphasis, not requiring (or expecting) an answer ("Are you crazy?" What can one do?")
