• simile a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g. as brave as a lion ).
• rhyme correspondence of sound between words or the endings of words, especially when these are used at the ends of lines of poetry.
• methapor a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. John's suggestion was just a Band-Aid for the problem
• Assonance repetionion of vowel sounds proud, round, cloud, white high night
• Alliteration repletion of consonant sounds in the first syllables of a series of words or phrase: nodded nearly, napping
• Syllables a unit of organistation for a sequence of speech sounds
• stress emphasis given to particular syllable or word in speech, typically through a combination of relativatley greater loudness, higher pitch and longer duration.
• couplet, tercet, quatrain, quintain 2, 3, 4, 5 lines
• stanza a group of lines that often indicates a conclusion of one thought and the beginning of another, a sensible divison.
• Enjabment is incomplete syntax at the end of a line;[2] the meaning runs over from one poetic line to the next, without terminal punctuation
